


GBSUP PARTICIPANT
INFORMED CONSENT
This document explains the principle of Informed Consent, how GBSUP is using it, and your actions based on the information provided.
The principle
For consent to be valid, it must be voluntary and informed, and the person consenting must have the capacity to make the decision.
The meaning of these terms are:

voluntary – the decision to either consent or not to consent to participate must be made by the person

informed – the person must be given all of the information about what the event involves, including the benefits and risks

capacity – the person must be capable of giving consent, which means they understand the information given to them and can use it to make an informed decision
-
For children and young people, the decision is made by an appropriate person eg parent, legal guardian etc
GBSUP will provide:
-
Access to and provision of relevant information that is clear, comprehensive and easy to understand

Enabling the participant to understand the significance of the information to help make an informed decision

The participant can make a voluntary decision to participate OR
-
The decision is made by an appropriate person eg parent, legal guardian, carer, responsible adult
GBSUP Informed Consent
GBSUP will ensure it:
-
protects the health, safety and wellbeing of all involved so far as is reasonably practicable in accordance with the GBSUP Health and Safety policy and other relevant policies and management plans

provides comprehensible and relevant information on the risks to personal health and safety, identified by suitable and sufficient site-specific assessment and appropriate preventive & protective measures

provides an opportunity for participants to consider all information provided; raise questions relating to the event and respond in an appropriate timeframe

accepts participants will make an independent decision regarding participation in the event
For Juniors and vulnerable adults, the decision must be made by a legally recognised representative eg parent, carer, guardian, responsible adult

Personal decision to participate in a GBSUP event
As a participant in a GBSUP event I accept:

That to achieve the wide-ranging benefits of participating in a GBSUP race there is an element of risk involved that may result in personal injury or worse. These risks include, but are not limited to, water immersion and its potential implications; collisions with other boards, equipment and /or participants; water based or bankside obstacles; other water users; impact of adverse environmental conditions eg weather, sea state etc. This is not a definitive list and I accept that there are some risks involved in this activity which GBSUP cannot fully eliminate or be directly responsible for

It is my responsibility to attend designated briefings and comply with the race rules; safety and other requirements set out in these briefings and other relevant information relating to the event

That GBSUP will, so far as is reasonably practicable, provide appropriate guidance, supervision, and safety measures for the event, on and off the water

That GBSUP will put in place suitable and sufficient preventative measures to protect my health, safety and welfare based on an appropriate assessment to eliminate, control or reduce risks to as low as is reasonably practicable

That GBSUP cannot control water quality and that it will make its decision based on the most current information and making use of a variety of sources

I will make my own decision regarding participation having assessed the most recent water quality information

I will provide relevant information to GBSUP on any medical condition, allergies, medication or other condition, physical or otherwise, that may affect my safe participation or any other participant in the event. If necessary, I will provide medical advice supporting my participation

I will agree with GBSUP in advance the use of a chaperone, who will require paddling skills appropriate to the prevailing weather and water conditions. GBSUP will not charge for a chaperone

My fitness and ability level to participate is appropriate to the event, venue and prevailing conditions

I will have appropriate personal clothing; board, paddle and leash; food and hydration relevant to the event and the prevailing conditions

I will be responsible for my own actions and decisions relating to participation and will monitor my own well being and fitness during the race, and will, if necessary, withdraw from the race

I will not be under the influence of alcohol or classified drugs during all phases of the event

I am responsible for making my decision to participate in the event and, to do so, have considered all the information that has been available to me

That GBSUP shall not be held liable for damage or injury for any actions it is not directly liable for
